Avery & Brown announced as finalist in Planet Mark Awards

Russ Avery • Sep 26, 2022

We are absolutely delighted to have been announced as a finalist in the 2022 Planet Mark Awards in the category of 'Best Newcomer'.

Every autumn, Planet Mark shines a light on its member companies and individuals that have gone above and beyond to maximise their impact.

The Awards offer a fantastic opportunity for Planet Mark members to celebrate and be recognised for the amazing work they are doing, from carbon reduction and supply chain engagement to social responsibility.

We are delighted to be in the running for Best Newcomer, after having achieved our Planet Mark certification back in June. Read on to learn more about what this means to us and how you too can take collective climate action before the year is out.

our first formal recognition for #operationregeneration

We're not out to win awards...

In fact, since founding the company back in August 2020, we have only entered two awards. It's common knowledge that a lot of awards are, unfortunately, 'pay to play' whereby unless you spend a lot of money on sponsorship or a table for ten people at the awards dinner, you're never going to be in with a chance of winning. So when we do enter an awards, it's because we believe in the integrity of the awards, the organisers and the judging panel, and we'll choose the category wisely based on the work we do.

But we are out to make a difference.

A burning desire to be a regenerative business - one which gives back more to society and the planet than it takes - sits at the heart of our strategy. We call it #OperationRegeneration and you can read more about it here. Running a business which puts people and the planet over profit has been accompanied by a huge amount of stress and hard work, but we do it because we believe it needs to be done. This is why we don't just get on with it silently. Instead, we shout about it from the rooftops so that other businesses can learn from us, be inspired by us, or even outright copy us... Whatever gets more businesses moving in the right direction and driving down emissions is fine by us.

Recognition from a company we believe in

As part of #OperationRegeneration, we decided to undergo Planet Mark certification back in the spring. Why? Because not only do we believe in the vital importance of year-on-year emission reductions, but we also believe in the vision, mission and values of Planet Mark as a business in its own right. It's a company which 'walks the walk' to a refreshing degree, and which understands the interconnectivity between environmental, social and economic impacts as a whole. In short, we are two businesses which are very much aligned and we have a huge amount of respect and admiration for the crucial work they're doing to create a better future.

To be shortlisted for the Planet Mark Awards means a great deal to us as a business, and to me personally. It's recognition of all the hard work we've done in our first two years to bring #OperationRegeneration to life. I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the other finalists across all categories, but a special shout-out must of course go to our fellow finalists for Best Newcomer: Surecav, Thakeham and Danesmoor Group. We're looking forward to meeting you all on the night!

Why not show your commitment to the planet & Future generations?

If you're ready to take the next step - or even the first step - on your business' sustainability journey, please consider Planet Mark Certification. We are a micro business with limited budget and resources, so when I say "If we can do it, so can you" I really do mean it! Excuses are easier to make than action is to take, but action and effort is always so much more worthwhile.

The UK and the whole world needs as many businesses as possible - no matter how small they are - to operate sustainably, and ultimately regeneratively. Measuring your emissions and committing to annual reductions is a great place to start and Planet Mark is the company to help you achieve that.

London, UK (17 October 2023) Three UK Certified B Corporations have launched a new campaign celebrating 'Better Business Pioneers' – individuals in the workplace driving positive change in the face of inaction from world leaders. The campaign, which launches on Monday 23 October 2023, comes in response to the lack of progress on pressing global issues like climate change, biodiversity loss and social inequality. By spotlighting those already driving change, the campaign aims to counter climate doom, inspire more conscious actions, and showcase how we all have the power to shape a better future. The campaign is a collaboration between Avery & Brown, a sustainable brand, marketing and creative agency, The Better Business Network, an inclusive network for purpose-driven business owners and leaders, and OPEN Media, an out-of-home media owner, operating a portfolio of screens across the entire UK.

This is the first in a series of several blogs looking at key brands in the built environment sector and how they approach impact reporting. We’ll be looking at design, outcomes, metrics, audience, insights and much more. Impact reporting is a crucial activity for each and every organisation, but it can also be daunting and overwhelming for a business embarking on its first. The purpose of this blog series is to show the many ways that your company’s impact can be reported and what to look out for along the way. For instance, is an organisation acting upon its insights? Are they communicating their message clearly? And most importantly of all, are they doing it in a way that is sustainable?
