Avery & Brown Becomes an Accredited Living Wage Employer

Russ Avery • Aug 09, 2023

We've got some great news to share: back in July, Avery & Brown joined the ranks of over 13,000 UK businesses to become an Accredited Living Wage Employer.

If you're scratching your head wondering what that means, let me break it down for you...

The real Living Wage isn't just a number; it's a statement. It's the only UK wage rate that's genuinely based on the cost of living, taking into account the things we all face. You know, like that unexpected dentist appointment and the dreaded weekly grocery shop. But guess what? It's not mandated by any law. Instead, businesses – ranging from SMEs to half of the FTSE 100, including big names like Google, Nationwide, and even football giants like Chelsea FC – voluntarily choose to pay this wage. Why? Because, like us, they believe their staff deserve nothing less than a wage that truly meets their everyday needs.

Why become a real Living Wage employer?

It isn't only about doing what's right – let’s hit you with some stats about the business benefits to paying the real Living Wage:

  1. 93% of University students are keen to work for Living Wage accredited employers. Yes, the brightest young minds of today see the value in it.
  2. 90% of consumers would rather buy from a Living Wage Employer. Yes, that's nearly everyone!
  3. Investors are eyeing up businesses that care for their employees. A whopping 85% say that investing in employees plays a role in their decision-making, and 62% specifically look for Living Wage Employer accreditation.

But why did we decide to step up and become accredited?

Perhaps unsurprisingly for those of you have followed our journey for a while, becoming a Living Wage Employer aligns perfectly with Operation Regeneration – our mission to be a truly regenerative business. Since day one, we've always believed in giving back more than we take, whether it's to society, our staff, or the planet. Plus, if you've read our 2020-2022 Impact Report, you'll know we committed to this very goal. And here we are, living up to our promise.

Our commitment to being an Accredited Living Wage Employer is just one more stride in our journey as we rapidly approach our three-year business anniversary. So, here's to more exciting steps, more positive impacts, and a brighter future for everyone connected to Avery & Brown.

As always, thanks for following our journey and being a part of it.

Next up: turning 3!

London, UK (17 October 2023) Three UK Certified B Corporations have launched a new campaign celebrating 'Better Business Pioneers' – individuals in the workplace driving positive change in the face of inaction from world leaders. The campaign, which launches on Monday 23 October 2023, comes in response to the lack of progress on pressing global issues like climate change, biodiversity loss and social inequality. By spotlighting those already driving change, the campaign aims to counter climate doom, inspire more conscious actions, and showcase how we all have the power to shape a better future. The campaign is a collaboration between Avery & Brown, a sustainable brand, marketing and creative agency, The Better Business Network, an inclusive network for purpose-driven business owners and leaders, and OPEN Media, an out-of-home media owner, operating a portfolio of screens across the entire UK.

This is the first in a series of several blogs looking at key brands in the built environment sector and how they approach impact reporting. We’ll be looking at design, outcomes, metrics, audience, insights and much more. Impact reporting is a crucial activity for each and every organisation, but it can also be daunting and overwhelming for a business embarking on its first. The purpose of this blog series is to show the many ways that your company’s impact can be reported and what to look out for along the way. For instance, is an organisation acting upon its insights? Are they communicating their message clearly? And most importantly of all, are they doing it in a way that is sustainable?
