Better Business Pioneers

in collaboration with the better business network + Open media

From humble beginnings...

It all started with a mind map. A brain dump on an iPad, scribbled down and shared online. This visualisation of where Russ wanted to take Avery & Brown, brought together the trials, successes, learnings, and goals of a business looking to do more than just make profit. The mind map resonated with business owners and individuals alike, taking on a life of its own.

Over various iterations the original document has evolved to reflect our changing experiences as a business, but its two core sentiments remain:

  1. All actions, no matter how small, can make a difference
  2. Sharing best practice is critical to encouraging change.

...To a national campaign

Today we launch a campaign that extends far beyond the screen of an iPad. Today we celebrate a huge range of actions and initiatives individuals have taken to foster positive change.

Alongside the Better Business Network and OPEN Media, Avery & Brown has nominated six outstanding Better Business Pioneers to feature in a 2-week out-of-home advertising campaign, as well as more than 20 others to feature on our site.

What is a Better Business Pioneer?

A Better Business Pioneer is just a person – both ordinary and remarkable.

  • It could be Jen, your CFO, who spent hours wrangling with your old bank's online chatbot so she can move your accounts to an ethical bank.

  • It could be Rasheeda, your CEO, who just walked away from a client that actively undermined the company’s values.

  • It could be Oli, the Account Manager who cycles to work through gale-force winds to reduce his carbon footprint, because every pedal stroke matters and pioneers don't mind a bit of rain.
  • It could be Sam, the HR Manager who's currently hunched over the small print of your company’s recruitment policy because he knows it's the foundation of a culture of respect and belonging.

  • It could be Mo, the Marketing Executive, who uses his spare time to offer pro bono social media support to a local football club.

  • It could be Zoe, the Office Manager, who galvanises the troops into abseiling down high buildings, or coming to work in fancy dress, to raise money for charity and make Brian from Facilities smile for once.

What makes a Better Business Pioneer extraordinary is not the vast resources, wealth, or power at their disposal, but their quiet conviction that small actions matter, and a commitment to following through on that belief. They remind us that the power to make a positive impact resides within each of us, waiting to be noticed.

What are the aims of the campaign?

We refuse to be bowed into pessimism by the lack of integrity shown by political leaders whose only agenda seems to be remain in power. We refuse to feel disempowered in the face of growing climate and social crises.

Celebrating positive action serves as a powerful catalyst for collective change. Each small act of awareness, compassion, or environmental responsibility not only makes a tangible difference, but also inspires others to follow suit. It showcases that anyone, regardless of their background, resources, or circumstances, can be a #BetterBusinessPioneer.

Our four core aims are as follows:

To celebrate the remarkable

By shining a spotlight on the unsung pioneers who have made environmental and social responsibility a part of their daily lives, the campaign will celebrate their dedication and commitment, inspiring others to follow their lead.

To counter climate anxiety

The climate crisis can be overwhelming, leaving us feeling anxious and powerless. By sharing stories of those who have taken action, we aim to combat those feeling and inspire confidence in our collective ability to tackle global challenges.

To showcase accessible activism

Environmental and social impact often seem daunting, but we want to show that making a difference can be accessible to all. We want everyone to know that they, too, can be change-makers, no matter their background or resources.

To facilitate collective change

The campaign will serve as a platform for individuals to connect, share ideas, and work together on initiatives that drive positive environmental and social change.
